The 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship was held from 10-19 July out of the Århus Yachting Harbour and the Bay of Århus, on the Jutland peninsula of Denmark.
About The Venue
The Bay of Århus is blessed with excellent sailing conditions, with average of wind speeds of 11 knots during July, whilst the bay provides protection from the roughest weather. July is normally the warmest month of the year, with temperatures averaging 20-25°C.
The Bay of Århus was shaped and sculpted by the last ice age. It is a typical glacial moraine landscape with hills and valleys, and the shoreline bears clear evidence of just how far the ice stretched in its progress toward the east. In some places the terrain rises to little more than molehill height, while in other areas 20 to 30 metre high cliffs tower over the water.
Århus is the second largest city in Denmark and, fittingly for a Youth Worlds venue, it has the lowest average age of any city in the country thanks to its wealth of educational institutions. It is also a city of great history, having been originally settled by the Vikings during the 8th century.
Denmark hosted the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship for the first time in 2008 and the city of Århus is throwing its full support behind the event. The city has plenty of experience hosting and promoting major sporting events, including the World Gymnastic Championships in 2006. This year's Youth Worlds has already been declared an 'Official City Event' and the Opening Ceremony will be hosted at the City Hall.
Finn LYCK, Event Manager of Sport Aarhus Events, said the city can't wait for the championship to get underway, "Sailing has always been one of the central sports in Århus and we're delighted to be hosting such a prestigious event as the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. We're looking forward to welcoming the world's best young sailors to the city and I'm certain they will enjoy the excellent sailing facilities and conditions we have here. We'll put all of our efforts into ensuring this is one of the biggest, best and most successful Youth Worlds ever."
Århus's five yacht clubs, representing more than 2,800 members, have established "Sailing Aarhus", which will be the official organizing committee for the Youth Worlds, in close cooperation with the Danish Sailing Association, ISAF and the City of Århus, represented by Sport Århus Events.
